Do you want to know more about Restorative Justice principles, and how to implement them in schools?
Author Catherine Bargen is probably one of the greatest resources for anyone wishing to learn about Restorative Justice practices and how they can be incorporated into a school system or any learning environment.
She’s authored a book that tells the lively account of how the Langley School District in British Columbia, Canada, joined forces with the Fraser Region Community Justice Initiatives, to introduce Restorative Justice principles and practices into their schools.
In 2000, they started this innovative new venture, which involved a unique approach, one that addressed not only the needs of victims and offenders, but also the root causes of conflict. It also involved asking questions such as ‘what do we mean?’ when talking about subjects such as justice, reparation, accountability and compassion, and ‘what is best’ when youth are affected by trauma, violence or any form of harm.
“We saw individuals embracing the values of Restorative Justice in their lives — the seeds of culture change that would eventually create more humane school communities.”
From “Educating for Peacebuilding”
A program such as this has proven to be valuable, because, six years later, the Langley School Board mandated that the schools in its district must offer a restorative approach when dealing with conflict and harm.
Want to know more about how this successful implementation in schools occurred? “Educating for Peacebuilding” is the book that details it all — the successes, failures, challenges, and lessons learned by staff, students and those involved in the Restorative Action movement in the Langley School District. It also explores the ongoing efforts to bring about positive culture change in school communities.
For anyone interested in shifting toward a more restorative focus in their school, this is a must-have book full of valuable information, insight and lessons learned from educators at the forefront of the restorative movement. Plus, all proceeds from the sale of this book go to support CJI’s Restorative Action Program.
